Ernest Judd joined the Royal Field Artillery on 14th November, 1914 after which he was ordered to join his unit, No.1 Base Unit, at Newcastle. He got no further than the village of Prudhoe, a few miles to the west of Newcastle, where. on 22nd November, he committed suicide by throwing himself under a train. He enlisted as a single man but was in fact married and there was a suggestion that this was preying on his mind and led to his suicide.
